'Sherlock' Season 4 News & Updates: Steven Moffat Hints At Season 5 Amid Rumors That Upcoming Season Is The Last

Amid rumors that "Sherlock" season 4 will be the last installment of Benedict Cumberbatch's crime drama, the show's co-producer and co-writer Steven Moffat hinted at a season 5.

Addressing Cumberbatch's statement that "Sherlock" season 4 felt "like the end of an era," Moffat stated that Cumberbatch did not say that the series ends with season 4. Instead, he said that the actor is actually "very keen" on reprising his role as the famous detective.

"If you just look at what (Benedict) actually says, he says nothing of the kind...he actually says he's very keen to carry on playing Sherlock Holmes," Moffat told reporters, as cited by Belfast Telegraph. He added that it is the "clickbait era" and something that was actually nothing was turned into a story.

Moffat, however, said that it is too early for discussions on "Sherlock" season 5. "We haven't even put the new series out yet. We haven't talked to the BBC about another run," he said.

In a recent interview with GQ British magazine, Cumberbatch said: "It might be the end of an era. It feels like the end of an era, to be honest. It goes to a place where it will be pretty hard to follow on immediately."

This, however, is not the first time Cumberbatch hinted that "Sherlock" might be done after the fourth season, citing conflicting schedules of cast members and the production team.

Cumberbatch added it is not for him to decide whether there would be another season. "It's not just about what any of us want. It's about what's actually right for the show, to be honest, and that has to be judged very carefully," he said in an interview.

Moffat expressed that the production is not intending to end the show at season 4 and it would be hard not to continue BBC's top hitting series.

"Sherlock" season 4 will premiere on BBC in January 2017. The series will run for three episodes.
