With the release date of the highly-awaited Pokemon Sun and Moon getting closer and closer (and Pokemon fans everywhere are getting more and more excited), the internet has been drowning with all sorts of news, updates and rumors for the upcoming Nintendo 3DS game. One of the juiciest details the gaming community has uncovered is the leaked Pokedex revealing Ultra Beasts!
Now, Pokemon Sun and Moon is said to move away from one of the best features that Pokemon games are famous for - mega evolutions. Now, don't scratch off Pokemon Sun and Moon yet on your to-buy game list as it's not entirely over.
Pokemon Mega Evolution
Pokemon started introducing mega evolution three years ago which did an interesting makeover in Pokemon generations. In order to mega evolve, the Pokemon must have special Mega Stones and it only happens during a contest or a battle. After the battle, the Pokemon will then return to their normal forms.
Not all Pokemon can mega evolve as well, it is targeted specifically to the most powerful Pokemon - yes, to make them even more powerful. For example, Venusaur turns into Mega Venusaur or Blastoise becomes Mega Blastoise. And yes, aside from changing the Pokemon's looks, mega evolution also changes its stats, ability, and even types.
So Why is Pokemon Sun and Moon Moving Away from Mega Evolution
Eurogamer has reported that they have received a confirmation that while Mega Evolution is still supported for Pokemon that are transferred into the game, however, the game itself will not delve deeper into the mechanic.
Loyal fans may get disappointed over the Pokemon Sun and Moon mega evolution news especially after following Pokemon X and Y and Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. But then again, Pokemon director, Junichi Masuda, pointed out the change in direction and revealed the new mechanic instead, Pokemon Z-Moves.
"What we have now is a way for people to use the Pokémon they want to use, so their favourites types, their favourite Pokémon, even those which perhaps weren't so popular before, now they can focus on their favourites in battle. That's why we've focused on the Z-moves this time around. Previously, there were Pokémon that weren't perhaps used too much in battle and they're perhaps going to come to the fore a bit more like 'ah, I can use this this way and perhaps make a different effect than was previously possible," Masuda explained.
When Masuda was asked if Mega Evolution would return, he answered that if a game would indeed happen in the future and they think that Mega Evolution would go best, then they'll certainly look into it. But for now, they don't have any particular plans.
