Pokemon Go Updates: How Niantic Should Implement Mega Evolution

It won't be that long until the guys at Niantic would consider thinking about adding Mega Evolution to long list of Pokemon Go upcoming features. Though this concept is fairly new to the Pokemon series in general, it would be lining up in the long queue of pending Pokemon Go updates.

Pokemon Go has been gradually adding game functionalities after it officially launched. Among the noticeable ones are the Buddy Pokemon system, capture bonus from medals earned, and the ability to train hard with teammates. The speculated ones today are trading, player vs player mode, and lots of other features in the wish list.

What is this Mega Evolution thing?

In the current Pokemon Series, Bulbapedia says that Mega Evolution is a new form of transformation for Pokemon starting in Generation VI. A Pokemon that has undergone Mega Evolution will have a different set of base stats, except for health points (HP), and can bear a whole different set of abilities and type versus its non-evolved state. You may view the list of Pokemon capable of Mega Evolution here.

In case Niantic decides to look into adding Mega Evolution for Pokemon, here's is an idea from Otakukart.com and we pitched in our own ideas on how they should implement it.

Prerequisite - Held Items

Before this can even be possible, it requires Pokemon Go to implement the 'Held Items' feature first. This feature would allow your Pokemon to hold items for you with slot limits, of course. The feature would then allow the Pokemon to hold Mega Stones and Key Stones which are discussed below.

Prerequisite - Trainer Level and Medals

Mega Evolution is such a huge advantage, this is why we suggest it would have trainer level and medal pre-requisites. Since the medal system is currently in use for capture rate, why not use it as basis on who can Mega Evolve what type of Pokemon. Of course, trainer level should also be a pre-requsite, say at Level 20 you can now use Mega Evolve, then depending on what level, a set of Pokemon can be Mega Evolved as well.

Key Stones and Mega Stones

Key stones should be required for a Pokemon to Mega Evolve. A key stone acts as sort of medium between the Pokemon and the Mega Stone itself. The Mega Stone, on the other hand, is the basic requirement for Mega Evolving a Pokemon. Once both stones are held by a Pokemon and once you are on the proper level with the appropriate medals, you can now commence with Mega Evolution!
