Overwatch is a video game with around 20 million players worldwide. There are speculations that Activision Blizzard is planning to do an Overwatch movie or TV show in the foreseeable future.
Overwatch Or StarCraft The Movie Coming Up?
An Overwatch or Starcraft film is now being explored by game developer Activision Blizzard, according to its spokesperson Stacey Sher. The subject was brought up following the success of Skylanders: Academies crossing over through television via Netflix. The spokesperson said their video games especially the old ones can extend their life in movies and television. Activision Blizzard chief Nick Van Dyke is optimistic about the success of their video games making a crossover to films. He said that making a movie out of video games gets easier when it has millions of players.
However, Overwatch fans would have to wait a bit longer since blizzard will proceed with the idea "cautiously and gently". The same goes to Starcraft and perhaps Diablo fans as well. Fortunately, Call of Duty will have a movie of its own real soon. This has been confirmed by the spokesperson.
The Warcraft Movie Experience
A popular video game does not automatically mean a box office hit movie. Warcraft is a cautious reminder of that. The WoW inspired movie performed miserably in the domestic front but was rescued from financial ruin by international moviegoers, according to Rolling Stone. In fairness to Warcraft director Duncan Jones, the feedback from WoW players and fans were mostly positive. Interestingly, Blizzard and movie producers are still exploring the possibility of making a Warcraft sequel.
In What Format Will Overwatch Be Shown?
There are speculations as to what kind of format will Overwatch be shown in film or television. The animation in the game's short video clip looks decent enough for a movie or television. There is even a fan made Overwatch anime style television show opening that could be viewed here. It is also possible that Blizzard may decide to feature live action film with real actors with a lot of CGI mixed in.
