‘Avatar 2’ News And Updates: James Cameron Prepares Four Sequels; To Release Them In 3D Without Glasses?

James Cameron has updated that he has promised to release four sequels to the acclaimed movie, “Avatar”. Aside from that, he is planning to make all the sequels viewable in a new kind of 3D, one where viewers do not need to wear glasses.

Canadian filmmaker, James Cameron is pushing for the new “Avatar” movies to be released in an upgraded 3D. James Cameron, who was responsible for other blockbusters like“The Terminator”, “Aliens”, and “Titanic”, has always released his new films in 3D format as much as possible to give viewers the maximum cinematic experience. And now, he is doing all he can to step up the notch in that experience.

Cameron recently gave a speech at the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) expressing his vision towards this advancement. He stated, “I’m going to push, not only for better tools, work flow, high dynamic range, and high frame rates—the things we are working toward. I’m still very bullish on 3D, but we need brighter projection, and ultimately I think it can happen—with no glasses. We’ll get there.”

Glasses-free 3D cinemas have not yet been established but a similar technological development can be seen in Samsung’s SUHD 8K TV, which is the first 3D television, and Nintendo 3DS, which has a comparable 3D feature in its console. But the real question lies whether or not Cameron can do it especially with four more “Avatar” movies lined up. Seeing how optimistic he is about watching the movies in 3D with glasses, fans might just be treated to an extraordinary cinema experience soon.

“I think [high frame rates] is a tool, not a format. I think it’s something you want to weave in and out and use it when it soothes the eye, especially in 3D during panning, movements that [create] artefacts that I find very bothersome. I want to get rid of that stuff and you can do it through high frame rates,” Cameron further explained.

The “Avatar”, which was released in 2009 was notably delayed for a short while to install 3D projectors so that cinemas can cater to the film’s high resolutions. Yet despite the efforts in delivering excellent 3D screenings all around the world, some countries failed to view it in 3D because of failure on the movie’s digital management rights protection. “Avatar 2” is set to release in 2018 while the next three sequels will be spread out until 2023.
