The news is making the rounds as it has been reported that the 2011 blockbuster South Korean movie “Sunny” is being planned to have a Hollywood movie remake.
Released in May 2011, “Sunny” is a South Korean comedy-drama film about the lives of seven best friends with the movie centering on the life of one of them as a middle-aged woman who tries to fulfill her dying friend’s wish of reuniting their circle of high school friends. The movie is highly praised for its plot of alternating between two timelines, which includes the present day where the women are middle-aged, and the 1980s when they were in high school. “Sunny” was a breath of fresh for a lot of viewers that it was positively and widely received, making it the 13th best-selling movie of all time in South Korea.
With its success, anyone would want a hand at remaking a beautiful movie that touched millions and it performed well enough not just in South Korea but overseas as well. So it did not come as a surprise when news came out that there are plans to get “Sunny” a Hollywood remake. It was revealed that Brett Ratner’s company, RatPac Entertainment, along with CJ Entertainment will be remaking the “Sunny” movie with Heather Hach on board for the scriptwriter position.
Brett Ratner is an American film director, producer, and screenwriter who is famously known for directing hit movies such as the “Rush Hour” film series that stars Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker, Nicholas Cage’s “The Family Man”, “Red Dragon”, “X-Men: The Last Stand”, and “Tower Heist” as well as producing the Fox series “Prison Break”. Heather Hach, on the other hand, is a distinguished and awarded American screenwriter recognized for works such as the 2003 remake of the movie “Freaky Friday” and the musical version of “Legally Blonde”.
There are mixed reactions towards the news of a Hollywood remake of the South Korean movie “Sunny”. “Sunny” was uniquely and effectively delivered in its South Korean version that fans are worried that the Hollywood remake would taint it and would just make a movie about teeny boppers. It is to be noted though that a film titled “Now And Then”, which consisted of a star-studded cast including Demi Moore and Christina Ricci, was released in 1995 and it had a similar plot as the movie “Sunny”.
Despite the reactions towards the Hollywood remake, the plans for “Sunny” to be remade is good to go. The South Korean movie, which was directed by Kang Hyung Cheol, stars Shim Eun Kyung, Kang Sora, Min Hyo Rin, Nam Bora, Chin Woo Hee, and many more prominent actors. Further details on the cast and the release date for the Hollywood movie remake has yet to be announced.
