He exited "Criminal Minds" season 12 without even an explanation as to why and he simply just left the BAU. This disappointed the fans so much since they believe that his character deserved more than how it was done.
It can't be denied that the ratings have evidently dropped down since Gibson exited the series. Thus, it has led to the speculations that the series will be cancelled and will no longer renew after season 12. "Criminal Minds" has been one of the longest running crime-drama series of the CBS network since it has been on television for almost 12 years now. Since the show has abruptly had their ratings dropped, there have been talks about having Gibson back on the show, or at least give him a proper exit. This will reportedly be done in the coming episodes, as they give justice to his character leaving the BAU.

The network has assumed that at Gibson's exit and actress Paget Brewster coming back on the series as SSA Emily Prentiss, the ratings of the show will still maintain. He fans have been excited at the news of Brewster coming back but Gibson's exit was not anticipated, let alone his exit from the series. The actor talked about the incident after it was announced that after what happened, he apologized for what happened. However, the production has already decided to let him go. After he shot the scene he intended to shoot that day, he went home and never got back on the set after that.
The network hasn't made any efforts to get him back on the show but the reports have been nonstop, and the low ratings might trigger his return. The fans will have to wait for an official announcement on the matter.
