NVIDIA announced Tuesday Feb. 19 that a smartphone referred to by the code-name "Phoenix "will feature its newly revealed mobile processor, the Tegra 4i. This smartphone and CPU combination makes game optimization possible with high end specs and a 5-inch 1080p HD display.
The 8mm thin smartphone features 4G LTE connectivity power along with next generation sought-after features of the Tegra 4i processor. The Tegra 4i runs the optimized version of NVIDIA's i500 software radio modem, integrating the speed of 4G LTE into the chip. In comparison with the Tegra 4, the larger chip meant a larger device, although the same i500 capability existed.
"NVIDIA is delivering for the first time a single, integrated processor that powers all the major functions of a smartphone. Tegra 4i phones will provide amazing computing power, world-class phone capabilities, and exceptionally long battery life," said Phil Carmack, senior vice president of the mobile business at NVIDIA in a press release.
The unique mobile capabilities of the Phoenix phone make it a blueprint for other phone manufacturers, helping to bring more Tegra 4i smartphones to the market quicker.
The advanced camera capability on the phone is handled by NVIDIA's Chimera Computational Photography Architecture which was introduced in the Tegra4. NVIDIA boasts that this is "including the world's first always-on high dynamic range (HDR) capabilities, first tap to track functionality and first panoramic photos with HDR.
NVIDIA and ARM teamed up to design the Cortex-A9 r4 for the Tegra 4i's new 2.3 GHz CPU. "Tegra 4i is the very latest SoC solution based on the ARM Cortex-A9 processor and demonstrates the ability of ARM and our partners to continue to push the performance of technology and create exciting user experiences," said Tom Cronk, executive vice president and general manager, processor division, ARM. He went on to say that the processor is effective for streaming and increased responsiveness as a result of optimization. An efficient and high performance CPU, the Cortex-A9 r4 holds the title of being the best in its class, he said.
NVIDIA will demonstrate its new Tegra 4i processor later this month at the 2013 Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona Spain.
