'Marco Polo' Season 3 News & Updates: Netflix Officially Cancels The Historical Drama After $200 Million Loss

"Marco Polo" is currently one of the most popular historical dramas in Netflix. Fans were rooting for another season, but it seems they are not getting any. Netflix issued a statement on Monday, Dec. 12 through its Vice President for Original Content Cindy Holland, extending its gratefulness for all the actors, producers, and creators who made the show possible. Media outlets reported that the main reason for its cancellation was the huge loss sustained by the streaming giant after two seasons of "Marco Polo."

"Marco Polo" Seasons 1 and 2

"Marco Polo" is among the first Netflix original to be canceled after two seasons. Fans who were following the series were expecting a third season, but it seems that the viewership for the historical drama was not enough to recoup the losses from the extravagant production.

The story followed the adventures of Marco Polo (Lorenzo Richelmy) in the court of Kublai Khan (Benedict Wong). The Weinstein Co. (TWC) produced the drama and the series was written by John Fusco. The first season debuted on Dec. 12, 2014, while the second season was released on July 1, 2016. The first installment mostly had negative reviews from entertainment sites.

"Marco Polo" Cancellation

There were speculations that "Marco Polo" will be canceled but fans were hoping that the streaming giant will give it another chance. Unfortunately, TWC and Netflix agreed that the series should be canceled since the latter sustained total losses of approximately $200 million because of this original scripted historical fiction.

Months back, Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos issued a statement to a media outlet that for the streaming company, "Marco Polo's" viewership is irrelevant. He added that the series was highly popular in Europe and in Asia. In response to the news that the series will be officially canceled, Fusco reached out to the show's fans through Twitter and expressed his thanks to everyone who was loyal to the show.

"Marco Polo" season 3 is officially canceled but the first two seasons are still available at Netflix.
