Super Mario Run is losing steam in terms of popularity and number of downloads. Industry observers believed that the Nintendo mobile game can still attract more players if the $10 price is lowered.
More Revenues With Lowered Price
Nintendo's one-time payment scheme for Super Mario Run is quite unique in the mobile gaming market. To be fair, the running plumber game is free to download and it's free to play up to the first three stages. Afterwards, players will have to shell out $10 in order to continue with the game. This is the stage where many players quit the game. Only about 1 or 2 people out of a hundred are willing to pay the price, according to Apptopia Inc. The research group believed that around ten percent of downloaders will buy the game if the price is $2 instead.
Nintendo Stockholders Voiced Sentiments
Nintendo stockholders were not easily swayed by the large Super Mario Run downloads, according to Bloomberg. They are puzzled as to why company officials insisted on a one-time payment scheme instead of the standard free-to-play model. Pokemon GO which is still played by millions made more than $600 million in revenue as a free-to-play game. It made money though, through the in-app purchases offerings.
Future Nintendo Mobile Games Coming
Despite the mixed results of Super Mario Run, Nintendo is still bullish on the future of mobile gaming. Company higher-ups have even decided to release more than three mobile game titles starting next year. Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem have already been announced as upcoming iOS game for 2017. There is also a third title included but Nintendo has yet to divulge any details. At the same time, there is tremendous pressure from stockholders to abandon the one-time payment scheme and adopt the free-to-play method instead. There have been earlier reports that Nintendo officials will give in to their demand.
