Sony Xperia Z Gets First Update, May Not Fix "Sudden Death" Glitch

Some Sony Xperia Z users reported that there is a glitch in the phone that causes the "sudden death" of the phone, turning it into a brick. Users posted their concerns on Sony's official forum and Sony promised to issue an update to fix the glitch. The popular waterproof and dustproof phone has been a hit since its release in February.

Xperia Z users reported that the smartphone would shut off suddenly and wouldn't turn back on. A hard reset of the device by holding down the "volume up" and power button at the same time revived the phone for some users. Sony wasn't sure what caused the glitch, but it doesn't seem to be a battery issue since many users experienced the phone brick on a full charge.

Sony acknowledged the "sudden death" issue that users were experiencing with their phones and said a fix would come. "We have come across numerous reports on forums that people's Xperia Z handsets are suddenly dying. From what we can gather, the phone is working fine and then suddenly dies, with users unable to switch it on. Sony Mobile says it is aware of the problem and that a "fix for this will be implemented in next software update," said the Xperia Blog.

As CNET reported, Sony initially advised customers to contact customer support while they worked on getting to the bottom of the issue. "We would like to reassure all of our customers that this is affecting a very small number of devices. If you have experienced any issues, please contact your local customer support centre who will be able to advise you on some easy steps you may take to resolve the issue," Sony said in a statement.

The first update for the Xperia Z was released Friday, but Sony is not certain if it corrected the sudden death problem with the phone. Its other newly released smartphone, the Xperia ZL received the same software update last week. "We expect the changelog to mainly consist of bug fixes, but we don't know whether this corrects the Sleep of Death (SoD) issues some have been experiencing," said the Xperia Blog.
