2016 has been a good year for the gaming industry which is manifested by both highs and lows. Just recently, Valve released the top 100 money-making games on Steam. The list is dominated by household titles but there are also some that are real shockers. Despite bad reviews and backlash, No Man's Sky managed to secure a spot in the list.
Steam's Top Money-Makers
Being one of the most popular gaming platforms, Steam has gathered millions of gamers under its platform. This week, Valve has unveiled the top-grossing games on its platform for the year 2016. Sid Meier's Civilization VI is the big winner gathering almost $80 million in sales for over 1.5 million copies. Grand Theft Auto V follows in the second spot and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive in third. Dark Souls III and DOOM round up the fourth and fifth places, respectively.
370 Million Copies
According to a Steam Spy report, the cumulative number of games sold on Steam for this year reaches almost 370 million and 5,245 of these are new titles, making 2016 the biggest year yet for new releases. Similar report stressed out however that "the overall sales and revenue from paid titles were roughly the same as the last year." In December alone, a total of 588 new titles were released.
It was noted that the sales include those done outside the platform, which include bundles, giveaways and free promotions. This figure doesn't include DLC sales or free-to-play revenue which means it could balloon up if considered. It is important to note as well that the copies redeemed on Steam does not necessarily reflect its sales in the platform as there are third-party stores as well.
No Man's Sky
In the meantime, No Man's Sky has made a name for itself for securing the 10th spot in the place and for becoming the top-grosser in the self-published category. Amid the awful review the game and its developer, Hello Games, went through last year, the space simulator comes as a surprise in the list. Completing the top 10 games are as follows: Rise of the Tomb Raider (6th), Total War: Warhammer (7th), XCOM 2 (8th) and Tom Clancy's The Division (9th).
