Teachers who have been trained well pass on what they learn to students. This has been proven time and again. Better teacher training helps in students' writing, as a study shows.
Teachers should constantly train as well in order to keep up with the needs of students. In a study, it has been seen that teachers who have participated in the Pathway Project had students who scored higher at the California High School Exit Exam. The Pathway Project is training for teachers in the cognitive strategies approach for teaching students.
For the Pathway Project, students were given written assessments wherein they composed essays based on fiction and non-fiction texts. The assessments were designed to measure how well were the analytical literacy skills of students. The exit exam is given to see how students were in the three basic skills of reading, writing and math.
Carol Olson is the lead author of the study. She is also professor in Education and the creator of the Pathway Project. She has said that on average, students under a teacher that has been in the Pathway Project have shown improvements in their first year. Students who have been under a Pathway teacher have done even better in their second year, according to UCI News. Olson has commented that the results have shown that teacher training has an impact on how students perform in school.
The study has been conducted in the school years 2012-2013 and 2013-2014. It involved 95 teachers from 16 Anaheim Union High School District schools, as Science Daily reports. The Pathway teachers have been taught to integrate the cognitive strategies approach into their classes. Those teachers who have not been under the Pathway Project were in control group classes.
The goal of the Pathway Project is to help students improve literacy and writing skills. These skills are basic in order for students to learn more later on. Better teacher training helps in students' writing. A study has also shown that psychopaths have below average intelligence.
