Contradictory rumors about the mysterious Google X Phone have driven smartphone enthusiasts crazy, but a new one regarding color options for the device may provide some degree of clarity.
The rumor, which comes from the folks over at Phone Arena, states that, while the previously touted customization features, including RAM and screen size, likely won't happen, the X Phone may be available in more than 20 colors.
Though a minor detail, the feature would still help Google's apparent agenda of distinguishing the X Phone from its smartphone brethren, which come in far fewer color options. The rumor is unconfirmed, however, so consumers are reminded to take it with a grain of salt.
The current rumor trend for the Google X Phone definitely seems to be that we won't see the sort of customization options and epic specs that would have made this potentially the holy grail of smartphones. That said, both Google and Motorola seem to be hinting at something interesting with their new product.
At the All Things D Dive Into Mobile conference in New York City, Google's Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt lauded the device.
"They have a new set of products, which are phenomenal," he said. "Very, very impressive."
Similarly, Motorola's design chief Jim Wicks said that the phone, or phones, will come in the "just right" size, run stock Android and be about more than just the specs. We're not entirely sure what the "just right" size would be, but Wicks seems to indicate that we won't be seeing phablets from Google any time soon.
While a sumptuous array of colors might not be the most exciting rumor we've heard about Google's mysterious device, it does further illuminate Google and Motorola's efforts to create a distinguished smartphone lineup.
