If you're big on Skyrim, prepare to have your mind blown. A crafty tinkerer has devised a system that allows you to explore the world of Skyrim through virtual reality.
The system is essentially a PC in a backpack with a clever, custom motion control setup based on Oculus technology. Here's the explanation from the inventor himself, known by his online handle, brantlew.
"A while back there was a long thread about how to build an omnidirectional motion device. A lot of ideas got kicked around and one of them was just creating a DIY free-motion detection system using Wiimotes and IR lights. I championed the idea, but it didn't seem to generate much interest since it didn't exactly fall into the category of a compact indoor device. The idea stuck with me and I've been tinkering with it over the last few weeks and have finally gotten it to the point where there is something to show. Right now it's still in early prototype phase with crude software and small scale mockups but soon I should be able to scale it up to human size.

Testing a prototype of the Red Rovr virtual reality motion system and the ST1080 HMD in Skyrim. Sensors on the player map real life movements into game controls, so the player is able to control the character simply by turning their head and walking. Additional controls such as menus and weapons are controlled with an XBox 360 controller in the hand. The system keeps the player within a real-life fixed boundary the size of a football field while the in-game character is able to roam the virtual environment freely.
