Mosquitoes aren't only irritating, but they can carry dangerous diseases as well. People have various ways to keep mosquitoes off. A study has found that spray repellents are better in keeping mosquitoes off.
Today, there are many ways to repel mosquitoes. The market is full of devices, lotions and spray that help in keeping off mosquitoes as well as other insects. A study has been made to see which of the products in the market are effective in keeping mosquitoes off.
A number of devices have been shown to be ineffective against mosquitoes. There are devices that can be worn such as bracelets and sonic repellers now on the market. Most of these though have been found to be ineffective in dealing with mosquitoes.
Stacy Rodriguez is a laboratory manager from the Molecular Vector Physiology Laboratory at the New Mexico State University. She has said that the products mostly claim that they work, but the study shows that they are far from effective. The study has tested five wearable devices, five sprays and one candle.
For the study, the wearables have been tested by a person in a wind tunnel near three compartments with mosquitoes in them. The products were tested for 15 minutes each. The mosquitoes would wander close to the subject during that time.
Most of the wearables were not found to be effective, according to The Pharmaceutical Journal. The only wearable that has seen some favorable results was the Off Clip-On. The other wearables such as the sonic repellers and bracelets did not show much effect.
The five spray repellants were more successful in dealing with mosquitoes, as Science Daily reports. Their effectiveness varied between products though. Spray on repellants that were effective were found to have DEET and PMD as ingredients against mosquitoes. The bracelets have mosquito repellent ingredients but were too minimal to be effective, the study noted.
Rodriguez has said that consumers should test which of the products are effective against mosquitoes. The study has found that spray repellents are better in keeping mosquitoes off. A study shows that carbohydrates are needed for faster recovery during workouts.
