Nexus 5 Release Date Rumors: Is LG Megalodon The Next Google Phone?

Google has yet to announce the details and the release date of the Nexus 5, the successor to its popular Nexus 4 phone, though that hasn't stopped many from participating in rampant speculation across the Internet. That speculation is only growing more severe as Google's annual I/O conference, set for next week, grows closer.

Adding to the fuel of the Nexus speculation are reports of the Nexus 4 being taken off the shelves at two British retailers, suggesting the Nexus 5 could launch soon. An immediate launch of the Nexus 5, perhaps during Google's I/O, could be possible, though other outlets suggest the phone is more likely to launch toward the end of 2013.

The next Nexus will reportedly be built by LG, the maker of the Nexus 4, and could be LG's alleged "Megalodon" prototype phone. Details of what Megalodon will feature have varied wildly, from featuring a 16-megapixel camera capable of recording 4k video to 3GB of RAM, but it may not matter: the rumors surrounding Megalodon could very well be ill-founded.

Rumors of the prototype were fueled by the website Android and Me, which reported the details of LG's Megalodon phone in early March with the help of an anonymous tipster claiming to work for Google. Android and Me later discovered its tip may have been the product of an 18-year-old German who created a rendering of the alleged Megalodon phone and passed it off as official material. The rendering and rumored hardware specs of the Megalodon made its way around the Internet and to many websites, including CNET.

But Android and Me reports that several other sources have been able to confirm some of the details surrounding the Nexus 5. Those sources claim the Nexus 5 will have a 5-inch 1080p display, run Android 5.0 — known as Key Lime Pie, contain a Qualcomm Snapdragon S600 processor, an advanced camera and 3GB of RAM. The claims echo what Know Your Mobile reports, though the actual hardware specs of the device remain unknown.

Onboard memory options will likely range from 16 to 64GB. As we've previously reported, the Nexus 5, whatever form it takes, will likely stay in the same price range as the Nexus 4, which goes for $199 and up.
