Google is in the process of developing new features that will make the Android operating system even better and smarter. It is not certain, however, if the new assistive features will make it to the new Android operating system or to another update for the current Android Nougat OS.
According to Venture Beat, however, Google is expected to unveil a new operating system at the I/O developer conference this coming May. If that is the case, then the Android O will likely have the said new features.
The first new feature called Copy Less lessens the need for copying and pasting a text from one app to another. The next one allows users to tap on a text containing information such as an address for a certain location and have it opened on Google Maps. Lastly, finger gestures may now be used to activate actions across Android. If the user draws the letter C on the display, Android will open a list of recent contacts. While these features are not necessarily new as iOS and other Android devices already have them, Google is at least trying to keep its next Android OS at par with the others.
Google rolled out the latest Android 7.1.2 Nougat beta to developers and beta testers early in February. With little to no indications that a new Nougat update will come out soon, expect the Android O to be revealed in May.
There are a number of speculations as to what the next Android OS will be called. The most popular, however, is Android Oreo. As tradition dictates, Google will name the next OS after a sweet delicacy. After calling its first two operating systems Android Alpha and Android Beta, Google went with names of deserts starting with Cupcake. The next operating systems were called Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich, Jelly Bean, KitKat, Lollipop, Marshmallow, and finally, Nougat. The next OS will begin with the letter "O" to follow the alphabetical order Google has gone with from the start. While Oreo is a popular choice, other names have been floated around such as Orange, Orange Crush, Orange Sorbet, Orbit, Oh! Henry, and Oatmeal Cookie.
Google Head of Android and Chrome OS Hiroshi Lockheimer tweeted an image of a cake covered with Oreo cookies last Feb. 20 followed by a Feb. 26 tweet showing the word OREO created from a group of what could be magnetic letters which he supposedly randomly saw in a Barcelona restaurant. Lockheimer seems to be just trolling everyone after he also posted an image of a Pocky with the caption #2018. This may mean an Android Pocky will roll out in 2018 which also indicates an Android O will indeed come out this year.
