On Tuesday, Microsoft finally launched the Surface Laptop. It is not a 2-in-1 device or a tablet with a keyboard, or a laptop with a detachable display but a solid traditional laptop with a keyboard and monitor in one device. It has an incredibly slim build, smooth touch and runs the latest operating system Windows 10 S. Since this new device is a lightweight device, reports claim that it will take on Apple's MacBook Air.
The Build, Design, And Weight
Microsoft has guaranteed that the new Surface Laptop looks and feels as premium as it can. The design and display lid of the body is made from strong and sturdy aluminum material. The keyboard of the laptop and the area around it features suede-like Alcantara fabric material. Microsoft's Surface Laptop weighs 1.25kg, making it very comfortable to carry around. On the front part, there is a regular USB 3.0 port, a 3.5mm audio port, a DisplayPort and a Surface Connect port.
On the other hand, Apple's MacBook Air gives a premium look and feel, thanks to the all-aluminium material and design of the body. It weighs 1.35Kg, that is slightly heavier than the Surface Laptop. In terms of connectivity, according to Engadget, MacBook Air has two regular USB ports, a ThunderBolt port, a 3.5mm audio jack and SD card reader.
The Specifications
The Surface Laptop comes in various colors of Platinum, Cobalt, Burgundy, and Gold, depending on which model a user wants. It uses the Intel HD 620 graphics in its least expensive model and Intel Iris Plus 640 technology for the other variant. Videos will be less crisp on the MacBook Air than the Surface Laptop, as reported by Gotta Be Mobile.
There’s no touchscreen experience on the Apple device because it would be just wasted on the Air. MacOS isn’t made for a feature like that but for a mouse and keyboard. The entry-level models of the MacBook Air come with a 1.6GHz Dual-Core processor and 8GB of RAM DDR3 RAM. An alternative lets a user add Intel’s 2.2GHz Core i7 processor but no additional RAM.
The Verdict
Overall, Apple's MacBook Air is a little outdated compared to the freshly released Microsoft's Surface Laptop. However, it still looks like a good choice to go for a cost of $855. The MacOS is very lightweight and supports multiple gestures. It is also very snappy in terms of its operation.
As of now, there are only a few reviews on Surface Laptop, as well as Windows 10 S. It is, indeed, lightweight but fans need to more proof that it is good enough to buy. Aside from that, many are also hoping that its goal, which is to help educational system, will be obtained.
