Corvette fans have been anxiously awaiting words on the 2014 Stingray specs sheet ever since the car was first unveiled in January at the Detroit Auto Show. Last week, rumors began circulating about the new Stingray's engine and on Wednesday, General Motors decided to make the news official: the 2014 Corvette Stingray will be capable of generating 460 horsepower and 465 lb.-ft of torque. The company stated that this is the most ever for a Corvette base model.
"The 2014 Corvette Stingray's LT1 engine is a triumph of advanced technology, delivering more power and torque than ever before with greater efficiency," said Jordan Lee, small block chief engineer, in a statement. "Drivers will experience more power and acceleration than ever before with the standard engine - in fact, its power and torque surpass many uplevel engines offered by competitors."
The 2014 Corvette Stingray will boast an LT1 6.2-liter V8 that General Motors has officially certified as the most powerful standard engine ever offered with the Corvette. There is, however, a caveat. To get the full 460 horsepower and 465 lb.-ft of torque, customers will need to spend an additional $1,195 for the sports exhaust. Still, even with the stock exhaust system, the new Stingray will produce an impressive 455-horsepower with 460 lb.-ft of torque. The carmaker estimates that the new engine will be able to get the Stingray from 0 to 60 in under four seconds.
According to GM, the improved engine power of the upcoming Corvette is the result of several new advents, including the Active Fuel Management system, variable valve timing and direct injection.
Unfortunately, there are still a few months left to kill before the 2014 Stingray begins rolling out to showrooms across the country. The coupe is expected sometime in the fall and a convertible should hit dealerships by the end of 2014. The Stingray coupe will carry a price tag that starts at around $51,995 while the convertible will command $56,995. The convertible and coupe models both cost around $1,400 more than the previous year's models. The car is also expected to have a fuel economy rating of 26 mpg highway, but GM has not made that official yet.
