iPhone 16's Battery Teardown Shows Electrically Debondable Adhesive—Here’s How to Replace It

Teardown videos of the iPhone 16 series has showed how to open the smartphone, but one particular video actually shows how to replace the battery of the device.

iFixit's latest video shows that the iPhone 16 devices are using a new kind of adhesive from Apple. This is called the electrically debondable adhesivey, and while this works like regular adhesive to stick the battery, there is a need to "hotwire" it for removal.

The iPhone 16's Battery Teardown Reveals New Adhesive

Apple has long used an adhesive that has pull tabs that users need to manually pull out carefully to detach the batteries from their iPhones, but a new teardown video from iFixit shows that Apple is now using something different. Instead of the long and painstaking process of removing the iPhone battery, users can do so in less than 10 seconds and effortlessly retrieve the power cell. 

This has been made possible thanks to the electrically debondable adhesives that Apple unveiled in its latest repair documents, which are available publicly.

Users only need to attach an electric source of nine to up to 30 volts for the process, and they can easily detach it from the board. It should be noted that  iPhone 16's model version is the only one with this technology.

Here's How to Remove Your iPhone 16's Battery

According to Apple, users need a power source for this, and a 9V battery can suffice. Next, users also need battery clips to attach to their new tabs. 

After powering off and opening the body of the iPhone 16, disconnect the battery from its connection to the board. Next, connect the red (positive) connector to the silver tab of the iPhone battery, and the black (negative) connector to the ground. Apple recommends to use the bottom speaker's screw. 

For a 9V battery source, the process may take up to 90 seconds, while iFixit's 20V DC power only takes 5 seconds. 

To remove the actual battery, Apple recommends either using a suction cup to lift it out or a nylon stick to pry the battery out. Metal tools should ve avoided.

Additionally, Apple suggested using ethanol or IPA wipes to remove adhesive from the board before installing the new one. 

iPhone 16 and What It Offers 

All of the models of the iPhone 16 series, are meant to run Apple Intelligence and Siri's upgraded version. However, there are still many features that set both the base and Pro lineup apart. 

Market analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has revealed that the iPhone 16's base models, including the iPhone 16 Plus, are more popular and saw a rise in demand compared to the Pro models. 

These more powerful and AI-ready versions of the iPhone have recently been available, offering a worthy upgrade for older iPhones. However, it is not recommended for iPhone 15 Pro series users as these too are eligible for Apple Intelligence.
