Final Fantasy 14: Stormblood In Trouble? Expansion Suffers DDoS Attacks On First Day

Final Fantasy 14: Stormblood has had a rough first day as problems plagued this latest expansion. Square Enix has assured gamers that it is not a problem on their end but the cause is more related to server problems. The game publisher revealed that the problems are caused by DDoS attacks.

DDoS Attacks Are The Culprit

Final Fantasy 14: Stormblood's Lodestone website gave an update on the problems and confirmed that they were due to DDoS attacks. The post indicated that these DDoS attacks started on June 16. They discovered that they were coming from an unidentified third-party who targeted FF XIV game servers on the NA data center.

What Is A DDoS Attack?

DDoS is the shortened term for Distributed Denial of Service. A DDoS attack occurs when a number of compromised systems that are infected by a Trojan are used by a third party to target a single system resulting in a Denial of Service (DoS) attack. These attacks are designed to inundate a server with tons of information resulting in its inability to process the information and therefore slowing its performance considerably. With DDoS attacks happening to Final Fantasy 14: Stormblood, gamers would naturally experience server problems.

Square Enix Is Deploying Counter Measures

Square Enix assured gamers that they are doing everything to solve the problem. However, they admitted that the DDoS attacks on Final Fantasy 14: Stormblood are still going on. Apparently, the third party attacker is constantly changing his methods. The company promised its supporters that it will continue to monitor the situation and solve the problem in all its possible angles.

Are Sensitive Personal Information Of Gamers At Risk?

A report said that this is not the first time DDoS attacks were aimed at Final Fantasy 14. The last time it happened was in 2014. There were also some concerns that sensitive information of gamers are at risk from these attacks. But Square Enix assured gamers that their sensitive personal information connected to their Final Fantasy 14: Stormblood accounts were not affected by these attacks.
