20th Century Fox announced two years ago that a new film adaptation of the “New Mutants” is in the works. Through the years, the production has released gradual updates on the cast and further progress of the movie.
The main cast was eventually finalized and the filming for the spinoff movie “New Mutants” has kicked off last month. However, it has just been revealed that actress Alice Braga has come on board to join the main cast and replace Rosario Dawson. It has not been explained why Dawson suddenly left the movie but at least the production was able to call in an immediate replacement while the principal photography is about to start.
Braga will now be playing the role of Dr. Cecilia Reyes. Her character is a medical doctor who possesses the ability to generate a bio-field protection for herself. According to the official X-Men comics series, Reyes decided to be a doctor when her father was gunned down in front of her back when she was a little girl and she had no way of helping her dying father.
There is actually more to Reyes’s character and the upcoming “New Mutants” movie will hopefully be tackling some of it. Braga will be joining the main cast of the said movie, which includes Maisie Williams of “Game of Thrones”, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Heaton, Henry Zaga, and Blu Hunt. The young actors will be playing the mutant roles of Wolfsbane, Majik, Cannonball, Sunspot, and Danielle Moonstar respectively.
Aside from the new cast, James McAvoy will be returning in the “New Mutants” film to reprise his role as the young Professor X, also known as Charles Xavier. Director Josh Boone has teamed up once again with writers Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber from “The Fault In Our Stars” for the new movie’s script. With the film kicking off with its shoot, it is slated to release on April 13 next year.
