Priscilla Chan, co-founder of the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, has funded 2017 Breakthrough Junior challenge with a scholarship of $250,000 for school students around the world.
The Breakthrough Junior Challenge is an annual global competition open for pupils under the age group 13-18. The task involves making a three minute video to explain a scientific idea under specified domains such as Physics, Mathematics or Life Sciences. Submitted videos will be judged based on the engagement, creativity, and effort involved.
"The Breakthrough Junior Challenge gives young people a chance to share their knowledge of maths and science in a fun and creative way," said Priscilla Chan, co-founder of the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, according to CNET.
Organized by The Breakthrough Foundation, the Prize money is funded on par with the Chan Zuckerberg initiative.
Selected student winners in regard with the above criterion avail a $250,000 college scholarship.
In order to recognize the efforts chipped in by a mentor, $50,000 is rewarded to the winning student's teacher. As an added remuneration, the school which the winning student represents will be provided with a $100,000 Breakthrough Science Lab.
"Every student involved helps us build a movement towards a better future for science," Chan said.
The website is open to receive applications from September 1, 2017. Video submissions will no longer be accepted post October first, 11:59 pm PDT (West Coast USA).
The winner of the Breakthrough Junior Challenge will be declared live at an internationally broadcasted Breakthrough Prize Ceremony on Sunday, December 3, 2017.
With over thousands of students participating from more than 100 countries last year, just fifteen videos had made its way into the finals with a tie between two clips representing two winners.
