Domino's is looking at ways to quickly deliver its pizza orders and is testing a drone, which could deliver two large pizzas up to a distance of four miles in just 10 minutes. The drones are just prototypes and the UK's biggest pizza delivery chain says it doesn't have plans to deliver pizzas by air in the near future, but the possibility is always there.
Domino's hired creative agency T + Biscuits to develop and test the pizza delivery drone "DomiCopter."
Tom Hatton, founder of T + Biscuits, told NBC News "We're looking at making flying pizzas a possibility." Hatton pointed out that the DomiCopter doesn't need to stop at traffic lights and says "If anything it went quicker than a pizza boy. We were amazed at how easy it was going to be."
The DomiCopter has eight spinning blades that lift the insulation bag containing pizzas. The agency tested the DomiCopter in Guildford, just outside London and the drone delivered two pepperoni pizzas to a destination four miles away within 10 minutes. More importantly, the pizzas retained their shape and were still hot when delivered to its destination.
Domino's has also posted a video of the DomiCopter online. NBC News reached out to Domino's to get some comments on the DomiCopter and the company said, "We had a lot of fun putting the video together. Domino's is an innovative company that is constantly looking at ways to deliver pizzas as quickly as possible. It could be great to think that one day pizzas could fly!"
The DomiCopter doesn't need a flying permit because the drone operates in less than 126 meters off the ground.
The prototype of the DomiCopter is going under testing at the Domino's headquarters. If the company ever plans to deliver pizzas using DomiCopter the weather will be something the company will have to watch out and especially, the unpredictable UK weather will play a key role if DomiCopter makes its appearance in the future.
