The official T-Mobile UK Twitter account announced Thursday that the BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) will be available for iOS and Android devices come June 27. The news might have been bogus and the tweet was immediately deleted by the carrier.
The reports, however, already made the headlines online but it seems the fans of the chatting platform using iOS and Android devices still need to wait a bit longer.
"Great news - BlackBerry Messenger will be available to download on iOS and Android from June 27th! J #BBM," the now-deleted tweet from the verified T-Mobile UK account had announced.
"Sorry folks, we got over-excited about the #BBM app coming to Android / iOS. No specific availability date yet, stay tuned for details," the T-Mobile UK Twitter account later posted a rectification.
BlackBerry has also confirmed that the BBM will not cross platforms that soon and the date, as revealed by T-Mobile UK, for the release was wrong.
"On May 14th, BlackBerry announced plans to make its ground-breaking mobile social network, BlackBerry Messenger (BBM), available to iOS and Android users this summer, subject to approval by the Apple App Store and Google Play. While there have been reports that BBM will be available to iOS and Android on June 27th, this is not accurate. We will communicate an update as soon as we have an availability date to share," stated a BlackBerry representative, when asked by CrackBerry.
BlackBerry first revealed in May that its chatting service will cross to the iOS and the Android platform. The BBM currently has around 60 million active users on a monthly basis and is expected to hit the Google Play and App Store this summer, on a date BlackBerry will later announce.
The BBM is the first messaging system on the mobile platform to offer read receipts and a group messaging function. These features have become essential to rival apps of the pioneering service.
Aside from the news that BBM is crossing over to the iOS and Android platform, BlackBerry's CEO Kristian Tear has revealed that the company is in talks with other phone manufacturers to get the BBM preloaded to other handsets.
"There is interest from other handset makers," said Tear in an interview with CNET. He declined to disclose any specifics about the said deals.
