Samsung has apaprently received the message loud and clear when it comes to what consumers want in high-end smartphones. A new report claims that Samsung's Design 3.0 will focus on bringing quality materials and design to its next-generation smartphones and tablets. The Galaxy S5 will reportedly be the first "Design 3.0" device and will include an aluminum unibody case.
The Android smartphone market has many players and companies like Sony and HTC have turned to focusing on the designs of their smartphones to differentiate themselves from the competition. Sony's Xperia Z uses what the company calls an OmniBalance design and highlights the coined phrase in its marketing materials for its flagship smartphone. Sony notes that when designing the Xperia Z, it focused on consistent attention to details and has only used premium materials like aluminum and tempered glass to build the smartphone.
Quality materials and design can also be attributed to the success that HTC is currently experiencing with the HTC One. Like Sony, HTC has also paid close attention to the details of its flagship smartphone. HTC has taken some design inspiration from Apple by using an anodized aluminum uniboody case with the HTC One, and that decision has paid off. The smartphone has been praised for its design and the device has brought HTC back to being a major player in the smartphone world once again. The company is expected to use the same design and materials in its upcoming HTC One Mini and HTC One Max.
Samsung is currently the top selling smartphone manufacturer and Galaxy S4, its flagship smartphone of 2013, has managed to sell over 10 million units within a month of its launch. However, the Galaxy S4 also had come under heavy criticism for having a polycarbonate body (read: plastic). Now, Samsung wants to enjoy the success that HTC is experiencing with the HTC One, so far as design is concerned. The South Korean company has come up with what it's calling "Design 3.0" as a new design direction that it will use in future smartphones and tablets. According to a new report, the first device that will use Design 3.0 will be the Galaxy S5.
Android Geeks is reporting that a trusted source has told the site that the Galaxy S5 will sport an aluminum unibody case to better compete with Apple, HTC and Sony's offerings. The source also claims that while the smartphone will gain a more premium design, that new design will come at a cost. The Galaxy S5 will supposedly lose the ability to have a removable battery due to the unibody case. This shouldn't be a major issue since many smartphones on the market currently have sealed cases and still offer long battery life.
It's going to be around a year before we can expect to see the Galaxy S5, so take this with a grain of salt, as many things can change during this span of time. We'll have to wait and see what Design 3.0 entails, but at least we know Samsung is going to make design an important feature in its future smartphones and tablets.
