Sony has really been stepping up its game in the Android world with its most recent Xperia smartphones and tablets. The company is planning an even bigger surprise in the coming weeks, literally - it will reportedly unveil one of the largest smartphones to hit the market with its Xperia ZU's 6.44-inch display.
It seems as if 2013 was the year that Sony really started to find its place in the Android world. When it debuted its Xperia Z flagship smartphone at CES it was very well received, not only because of its waterproof and dust-resistant case, but it had something that Sony had been known for - quality design. It soon followed up with another well-received waterproof device; the Sony Xperia Tablet Z. The tablet is the thinnest 10.1-inch tablet on the market at .27-inches thick. Sony received praise for the tablet with many reviews calling it the best Android tablet on the market. The company is not slowing down with its army of Xperia devices and it will reportedly announce the Xperia ZU phablet in the coming weeks, and if the specs are to be believed, it is going to be a very impressive device.
Sony had recently sent out invites for a press event it will be holding on July 4 in Paris. According to a new report, Sony will be following Samsung and HTC's naming conventions by keeping its current flagship smartphone's name front and center. The ZU is for "ultra" and the ultra is for the 6.44-inch display that will be gracing the phablet. The report claims to reveal the official specs of the device.
The Xperia ZU will supposedly look very similar to the Xperia Z but will feature a 6.44-inch 1920 x 1080 IPS LCD X Reality display with 342ppi (pixels per inch), will run Android 4.2.2, be powered by a 2.2GHz Qualcomm quad-core processor, include 16GB of internal storage, 2GB of RAM, an 8-megapixel Exmor RS camera, a 1.3-megapixel Exmor R frot facing camera, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, a microSD expansion slot with support for up to 64GB microSD cards and a 3,000 mAh non-removable battery.
The phablet will also be dust and water-resistant. Sony reportedly won't include a stylus with the Xperia ZU, but instead will allow users to use any kind of standard pen or pencil on its scratch-resistant display. The report also claims Sony will include a special note taking and drawing software to take advantage of this new feature and the applications will be linked to Evernote.
The Xperia ZU is expected to be announced at Sony's July 4 event and is expected to go head-to-head with the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and HTC One Max in the phablet wars.
