Pregnancy belt allows dads-to-be to feel baby’s movement

Expectant dads do not have to feel left out anymore when moms-to-be say that they are feeling the baby kicking. Huggies has invented a pregnancy belt that can make the excited husband feel the unborn baby kick.

Huggies has developed a pregnancy belt in collaboration with an Ogilvy & Mather, an ad agency in Argentina, for a Father's Day electronic greeting card. The video was posted on different social media sites on June 10.

A video released by Huggies show real life couples trying out the pregnancy belts in a hospital in Buenos Aires. The video shows some would-be fathers holding back tears as they feel the how moms feel when their baby moves.

"I can feel him," exclaimed one man in the video.

It took the company four months to develop the pregnancy belt and it actually comes as a pair. One belt with electronic sensors will be worn by the mom-to-be. This belt will detect the movements of the baby inside her womb which will then be transmitted wirelessly to the pregnancy belt worn by her spouse.

The video shows a pregnant woman fitting the band while her husband was also asked to wear the belt.

The belt worn by dad is equipped with motor vibrators and LED lights that are activated by the signals coming from the belt worn by his wife. The vibrators are similar to the ones found in cellphones and generate short but strong impulses to let the dad feel the baby's "kick" exactly where the mom felt it in real time.

"We think it's a new and different way for dads to experience the emotions of pregnancy and it's certainly worth highlighting in this special time of year," said Eric Bruner, a spokesperson for Huggies' mother company Kimberly-Clark, in an interview with Today.

"We're very pleased with the response on this video and the emphasis that it puts on dad's experience during pregnancy," Bruner added.

Despite this feel-good news, there is bad news for those who want to get a pregnancy belt of their own - it is not going to be rolled out commercially.
