Microsoft is set to roll out the heavily rumored Windows Phone 8 GDR2 update in July, if a new report is to be believed.
According to UberGizmo, "Microsoft has reportedly slated Windows Phone 8 GDR2 update release for July."
The latest information is courtesy of Australian carrier Telstra, which has put up a status list of updates for the devices it offers. The list reveals that the Nokia's Lumia 920 will be the first WP8-powered handset which will receive the new GDR2 update on July 8. The Lumia 520, HTC 8X and HTC 8S are expected to get the software update a week later on July 15.
Microsoft launched its WP8 mobile OS mobile in 2012 and has not rolled out any major software updates so far. The OS got updated to Portico or GDR1 (8.0.10211.204), which was a minor tweak. The impending GDR2 software update will be the first major update.
Reports have been rife that Nokia will push out its Amber update, meant only for its Lumia brand of Windows Phone devices, in July. The Amber update's roll out is speculated to coincide with Microsoft's GDR2 update and will build on the latter.
The Amber update is slated to bring ISO support for speeds up to 3200, image quality enhancements, superior color production, faster burst shorts and more, users' way.
Microsoft's GDR2 update is also expected to bring new features to all Windows Phone 8 devices, including support for the previously Verizon-exclusive DataSense app and support for FM radios.
Telstra's list does not reveal a specific date for when the GDR2 update will hit global users of WP8 handsets. While the list also includes HTC devices, the company is yet to confirm the release of the GDR2 software update.
