Nissan ZEOD RC: World's fastest electric car with top speed of over 185 mph, heads to Le Mans

Nissan has unveiled the Zero Emission On Demand Racing Car or ZEOD RC, the fastest electric car in the world today with speeds reaching more than 185 mph. The ZEOD RC will be heading to France next year to participate in the grueling Le Mans 24 Hours in its Garage 56 event specific for showcasing innovative car technologies.

The Nissan ZEOD RC will mark the return of the car manufacturer to Le Mans since its last participation in 1999 with the R391 prototype.

The odd looking prototype will serve as Nissan's lab rat for innovative technologies that it wants to implement so it can make its way to the main category of Le Mans. Nissan first announced its intention to return to Le Mans back in February.

"Nissan has become a global leader in the development of zero emission automotive technology, and the Nissan ZEOD RC will allow us to further develop those capabilities using the toughest endurance race in the world as a mobile test bed to test the potential of our planned LM P1 power train," explained Andy Palmer, executive vice president at Nissan Motor Company, in a press statement.

"The Nissan ZEOD RC is a natural progression that follows on from the development of the Nissan LEAF road car and the LEAF RC race car prototype. The technologies developed through the ZEOD RC program will form part of future innovations for Nissan road cars," Palmer added.

Nissan did not reveal much detail about the ZEOD RC but hinted that the ZEOD RC makes use of the same battery technology as the LEAF electric car that can go as fast as 186 mph. Multiple versions of the electric race car will be tested next year and most likely in the next few years.

The design of the Nissan ZEOD RC focuses on achieving the best aerodynamics to help with the performance of the vehicle and ensure excellent energy efficiency. The design lines of the car are evident of the inspiration lifted from DeltaWing, another race car project of Nissan that took part in the Garage 56 at Le Mans last year.

The car manufacturer will partner with Michelin to have the perfect tires for the race car prototype.

The ZEOD RC will have its first test runs this summer.
