Sony unveils the water resistant SmartWatch 2

Sony has unveiled the water resistant SmartWatch 2 (SW2), which the company is expected to release in September this year.

The Sony SW2 is a second screen for your Android smartphone that enhances the existing functionality of your handset and at the same time brings new benefits. The sleek designed SW2 offers a multi-functional watch, notifier, Android app interface and phone remote control, all-in-one.

With Sony's new watch, you can answer calls, take photos remotely, set an alarm, control presentations, check a map, read previously downloaded emails, track your fitness activity and adjust music volume and more. And yes, the device also shows you time whenever you want.

At the SW2 announcement, Stefan K Persson, Head of Companion Products at Sony Mobile Communications said, "Sony is the proud leader in the smartwatch market since introducing our first Bluetooth watch in 2007. Competitors are only now launching first generation devices, while we are already launching a 3rd generation device with all the insight gained from over half a million customers combined with Sony's wealth of technology expertise to create the best ever smartwatch experience."

Perrson also added, "The future of wearable devices is incredibly bright with analyst research predicting 41 million 'smart' watches will be sold by 2016. We have over 200 unique apps dedicated for Sony SmartWatch with over one million downloads to date and we are continuing to work with our strong developer network to deliver ever more compelling smartwatch experiences."

The SW2 has a 1.6-inch 220 x 176 pixels touchscreen and an aluminum body. The latest watch is also water resistant with IP57 certification. The SW2 is compatible with Android smartphones running on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) or higher. Unfortunately, the SW2 won't be compatible with iPhone.

The SW2 will be available in a black color option only and the company hasn't revealed its price.
