There are rumors brewing that LG is preparing to release a follow-up to the Optimus G and the smartphone would be so thin that its volume buttons would have to be placed on the back of the device. Images of the smartphone have now leaked, confirming the smartphone will indeed be ultra-thin and its volume buttons have been placed on the back of the smartphone.
LG is holding a press event on August 7 where it is expected to officially announce its next flagship smartphone. Over the last few months there have been multiple rumors claiming that the device would feature an edge-to-edge display and would be so thin that the volume buttons would not fit on the side of the smartphone and would be moved to the back of the device.
The leaked images confirm that the smartphone will officially be called the LG G2 (it appears that LG is going to drop the Optimus branding). The device has very thin bezels around its display, confirming the rumored edge-to-edge display. There are no capacitive keys on the front of the smartphone; instead LG will be using onscreen keys like those found on Google's Nexus smartphones and tablets.
The images also show the LG G2 will be extremely thin with round tapered edges. The images confirm that the smartphone will not have volume buttons on its side and as previously reported, the buttons will be placed on the back of the smartphone. The volume buttons are positioned just below the camera and are separated by what some claim is a notification ring and fingerprint scanner.
According to the latest rumors, LG G2 is expected to feature a 5.5-inch 1920 x 1080 Full HD display, run Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, will be powered by a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor with Adreno 330 graphics, include 16GB of internal storage, 2GB of RAM, and a 13-megapixel camera.
The G2 is expected to go head-to-head with the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, HTC One Max, and Sony Xperia ZU in the phablet wars when it's released. We'll have to wait until August 7 to get all of the official information from LG on what is certainly shaping up to be a very interesting and ultra-thin smartphone.
