Imgur releases its own meme generator

Imgur has long been among the most popular destinations on the web for viewing and sharing memes, but users have always been forced to go to other sites to actually create the images. That all changed on Thursday when Imgur rolled out its very own meme generator.

Users can now create their memes directly on the site where they're pretty likely to post them anyway. Imgur said the addition of its own generator was primarily the result of user feedback.

"Our community has been asking for an Imgur meme generator for a long time, so we hope they're as excited about this new meme generator as we are to deliver it to them," said Alan Schaaf, Founder and CEO of Imgur in a press statement. "It just makes sense that as more content is hosted and shared on Imgur, we continue to hand over content creation tools to our community. We can't wait to see what they come up with."

While Imgur users have long requested that the site add its own meme generator, their demands reached a fever pitch after Reddit recently banned a popular meme creation tool amid allegations of vote manipulation.

"Our community made it clear that this had to be done as quickly as possible, so we committed to doing whatever it took," said Schaaf. "This was no small task - our engineering team rocked it."

Ironically, by the time the Reddit incident had transpired, Imgur's tool was already long finished and the company was simply still working on integrating it into the rest of the site.

Imgur says that the new offering stays true to the company's mission of finding new ways to innovate with existing products. While many other sites offer meme generators, few, if any have the ability to reach an audience as massive as Imgur's.
