Sceptre's SoundBar will turn your dumb TV into a smart TV

If you've always wanted to upgrade your entertainment center with a Smart TV, but aren't looking to break the bank in the process, then Sceptre has just the device for you. It's called SoundBar 2.1 and it carries a $299 price tag.

Sceptre's SoundBar 2.1 is a combination of an external speaker and Wi-Fi enabled content streamer. The device has a built-in 35W subwoofer for a "sculpted bass response" and added sound fidelity. It also boasts SRS WOW audio tech, which the company claims provides a more natural sound. SoundBar 2.1 is compatible with any TV that is 40 inches or smaller.

SoundBar 2.1 is most notable, however, for its Smart TV features, which are delivered via Android Ice Cream Sandwich. Users simply plug in the device and can instantly access the Google Play store and begin downloading apps. The device comes with a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi receiver compatible with 802.11 b/g/n, so you should have no trouble jumping onto a high-speed wireless data connection and streaming to your heart's content.

"The SoundBar 2.1 with built-in subwoofer and Android Platform turns your traditional HDTV into a Smart TV at a fraction of the cost," said Cathy Chou, Sceptre's vice president of operations. "Our newest addition to the family of SoundBars not only enhances your HDTV experience, but also brings people closer by giving you access to the same applications as a computer, including Skype, Facebook, Instant Messenger and more."

For the moment, it is not yet known how much internal storage space the device carries, or if expandability is an option, but if you end up purchasing one, please let us known in the comments. The specs data that has been released so far on SoundBar 2.1 can be found here.

SoundBar 2.1 is currently available at Walmart, Amazon, Sears and K-Mart. Sceptre also offers an optional remote for the device.
