Nokia will soon release a substantial update to its Lumia smartphones and a new video shows the Lumia Amber update running on the Lumia 920.
The Finnish company has been committed to Windows Phone and has only released smartphones running Microsoft's smartphone operating system recently. It has become the face of the platform even though Samsung, HTC, and Huawei also sell smartphones running Windows Phone 8. Unlike those companies, however, Nokia gets more freedom from Microsoft to add its own applications and features to its Lumia handsets.
Nokia will be releasing a software update that will also include the Windows Phone 8 GDR2 (general distribution release 2) update from Microsoft along with Nokia's own Amber update. The Amber update is already included on the Lumia 925 and is expected to be available for all Windows Phone 8 Lumia smartphones in August.
Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 GDR2 will be released to all Windows Phone 8 licensees and it will bring CalDav support, expanded Data Sense support, FM radio, and other enhancements to its smartphone platform. Nokia will include GDR2 as part of its Lumia Amber update and will add some cool and exclusive features to WP8 Lumia smartphones.
The always-on clock feature will allow the smartphone to display the time on the screen even while the device if powered off. There's no need to turn on your smartphone to see the current time, it will always be displayed. While this feature uses the smartphone's screen to display the time, it does not take a toll on battery life. Another feature Nokia will include is the ability to double-tap the smartphone's display to wake it from standby.
Nokia will also add a new camera app called Smart Camera in the Amber update. The app is already shipping with the Lumia 925 and gives users the ability to shoot a sequence of photos, allowing them to choose the best shot. It also includes editing features, such as removing unwanted objects from pictures, choosing best faces for group shots, blur effects and more. Nokia is also including more background images to be used with the lock screen.
UnleashThePhones was able to get a sneak peak at an early build of the Amber update running on the Nokia Lumia 920 and posted the video below, showing off the new features.
