Leaving a Twitter thread you don't want to be a part of anymore may soon be a lot easier.

The company behind the popular microblogging site is rumored to be testing a new feature that would let users untag themselves from a thread on Twitter.

A recent tweet from writer and researcher Jane Manchun Wong featured an apparent screenshot of a new "leave this conversation" feature on Twitter. According to the screenshot, the new feature would allow users to untag themselves from a conversation or thread. This untagging means that others would be unable to mention the said user in a thread again. Notifications about that thread would no longer reach them either should they leave the conversation.

However, Wong warned in a follow-up tweet that other users would know if you left a thread. This is due to your Twitter handle appearing as plain text instead of being hyperlinked to your profile.

Twitter has yet to confirm whether they're actually testing this new feature or not, per The Verge.

New Twitter Feature: Back to the Past

A previous version of the "leave this conversation" option was leaked on June 2021 by Dominic Camozzi. In his tweet, he displayed a screenshot of Twitter's notification page with the option "Unmention yourself" displayed on the screen.

The feature works just like the "Leave this conversation" feature as it removes the hyperlink to the user's Twitter handle, prevents other users from mentioning them, and notifications about the thread will no longer be sent. There is also a timed option where users can choose to leave a thread and not get notifications about it for a set amount of days.

Unlike the "leave this conversation" feature, the "unmention yourself" option isn't reversible. Because of this, people cannot rejoin a thread once they unmention themselves.

Similar Twitter Features We Already Have

Twitter has some existing features that could mimic the "leave this conversation" feature to a degree. For instance, users can turn notifications off for a thread they're mentioned in through the "mute this conversation" feature. However, their Twitter handle is still accessible to participants in the conversation.

Another existing feature gives users the choice of removing followers from their Twitter page, allowing them to "soft block" the followers chosen.

Users can also choose who can reply to their tweets even after they were posted using the "everyone can reply", "only people you follow", and "only people you mention" options. Although anyone not included in the last two options would still see that user's tweets, the option to reply to that tweet is greyed out for them. Additionally, restricted users can still retweet, retweet with comment, share and like the tweets they're unable to directly reply on.

Truth Social Hits No.1 in App Store Chart

On other news, the Truth Social App from Donald Trump's camp went no. 1 in the Apple App Store charts after it was released Sunday midnight.

According to CNET, the app was so popular that others who downloaded it were unable to sign up and had to be put on the waitlist.
