Fortnite's New Look: Chapter 3 Season 2 Showcases New Characters, Removes Building Dynamic

Epic Games removed one of Fortnite's signature mechanics while adding new characters for the third chapter of its second season.

However, a Polygon article mentioned that the removal is part of the chapter's focal point and should be back in the near future, citing a story-related event.

Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 2 New Features

Aside from the removal of Fortnite's building mechanic, Epic Games also added new ways for players to navigate the map to help them adjust to the new gameplay. Players now have a higher default speed, which also increases sprint speed. Players can also now mantle onto high ledges they can't jump onto, a la parkour, per Epic Games' patch notes.

Another addition to Fortnite is the new overshield, which is players' first line of defense that will help them maintain cover. Epic Games explained that the overshield would take damage first before a player's actual shield and health.

The overshield will also regenerate if it goes down to zero. However, Epic Games didn't mention how fast it would restore itself.

Epic Games also added new weapons into the game, such as the Combat SMG and Strike Burst Rifle, which seem to be based on the Steyr AUG. Other weapons such as a Thermal Scoped Assault Rifle and Revolver, a Storm Scout Sniper Rifle, and a Drum Shotgun will also come to the game as unvaulted weapons.

Ten previously removed weapons have also made a return to the game. These weapons include the Ranger Assault Rifle, Shadow Tracker, The Dub, and the Boom Sniper Rifle.

Speaking of guns, Epic Games also made changes to weapons with first shot accuracy mechanics like the Ranger Assault Rifle have them do more "near-perfect spread accuracy" moments.

Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 2 New Characters

Fortnite's latest chapter also introduced several Marvel characters, like Doctor Strange and Prowler, into the game's world, along with tanks and resistance fighters from the Fortnite universe.

These resistance fighters are said to be on a quest to restore the game's building mechanics to the game, which means it's highly likely that the feature will make a return in the future.

Epic Games noted that the game's building mechanics are still available in competitive/Arena playlists as well as in Team Rumble and Creative Islands.

Additionally, a Forbes article cited a statement from data miners that the game's building mechanic would come back in nine days, and that a no-building LTM will drop later this season for players who prefer a more grounded experience.

Drivable Vehicles

The third chapter of Fortnite's second season also added drivable vehicles in the game. The IO Titan Tank can be driven while shooting its main cannon while the new siege cannons offer players a faster way to reach places without the risks of doing the journey on foot.

Players can use their gliders mid-flight after using the siege cannons or land unhindered without taking damage.
