A 15-inch MacBook Air could already be in the works.
According to a recent report from Apple Insider, the Cupertino-based smartphone giant is redesigning its MacBook Air into two sizes: a 14-inch model and a 15-inch one.
The 15-inch MacBook Air is expected to be on store shelves come 2023.
Apple's Future MacBook Airs Details
Apple Insider's report mentioned that the 15-Inch MacBook Air would also receive an increase in its display size alongside the existing MacBook Air, per Display Supply Chain Consultants analyst Ross Young.
The information Young shared with Apple Insider can be found in its in-depth Quarterly Advanced IT Display Shipment and Technology report, which comes with a few details about what to expect from Apple over the coming years, per 9to5Mac.
Although it remains unclear how Apple would increase the 15-inch MacBook Air's display size, the company could reduce its bezels to do so or create a larger MacBook Air that could hold a 15-inch display.
By contrast, MacBook Airs currently available in the market have a 13-inch display.
The 13-inch MacBook Airs may also see a redesign, with Apple reducing its bezels to make their displays measure close to 14 inches. This new display size would make them comparable to current MacBook Pro models, Apple Insider claims.
Bloomberg previously reported that Apple planned to develop and manufacture a 15-inch MacBook Air and a 13-inch redesign in early 2021 but ultimately decided against it.
9to5Mac also mentioned in a separate article that the company stated in its internal emails it planned to release a 15-inch MacBook Air in the first half of 2008 but did not follow through with its plans.
The question is, why now?
9to5Mac's Chance Miller said in a separate article that this year is a good time for Apple to "shake up" the MacBook form factor due to its transition from Intel chips to Apple Silicon ones, which have the capabilities Apple needs to "dramatically redesign and improve its products.
Although Young mentioned that the 15-inch MacBook Air will come in 2023, TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said in a tweet that the 15-inch MacBook Air is expected to enter mass production in the fourth quarter of 2023, per The Verge. This information could mean we might see the 15-inch as late as early 2024 at the latest and late 2023 at the earliest.
Ming-Chi Kuo also added that although the larger display will consume more power, Apple's design goal for the 15-inch MacBook Air is to use the same 30W power adapter as existing MacBook Airs.
These Macbook Airs might also not be actually called MacBook Airs when they are released, Ming-Chi Kuo said. Speculations on the new name may be rampant soon.
Other Apple Products to Look Forward To
Aside from the 15-inch and 14-inch MacBook Airs, Ross Young also believes that the company is redesigning a 10-inch iPad model to have a larger 10.9-inch display like the iPad Air.
Just like with the 13-inch MacBook Air, Apple may be considering reducing the bezels of the iPad to have its display measure up to 10.9 inches, a display comparable to that of the iPad Air's.
