Tomb Raider is finally back! Crystal Dynamics announced the early development of Tomb Raider.
Crystal Dynamics, the franchise holder of Tomb Raider, has confirmed that a new Tomb Raider video game is in development and will be built using Unreal Engine 5.
This news was also revealed by Crystal Dynamics' Tomb Raider franchise general manager, Dallas Dickinson, during Epic Games' State of Unreal 2022 event.
In the State of Unreal 2022 event, Dickinson stated that the new generation of Lara Croft's upcoming adventure will be released in a "high-quality cinematic action-adventure experience."

With the new Tomb Raider, Dickinson stated that the team's goal is to "push the envelope of fidelity," and that their team wants to deliver the Tomb Raider experience that fans have come to expect from Crystal Dynamics.
Crystal Dynamics is the video game company behind the critically acclaimed Tomb Raider reboot trilogy that began in 2013. The video game company also added that they will be creating the new Tomb Raider video game with Epic Games' newest creation software called Unreal Engine.
Under the direction of Crystal Dynamics, Shadow of the Tomb Raider was the most recent game under the franchise to be released. It was developed by Crystal Dynamics' western sister studio, Eidos Montreal. Among the titles developed by Crystal Dynamics is the sequel, Rise of the Tomb Raider, released in 2015.
However, when Shadow of the Tomb Raider was released, the game received lukewarm reviews, and it is currently unknown whether or not this new game will pick up where Shadow left off.
The Tomb Raider official Twitter account also posted stating:
"Crystal Dynamics is incredibly excited about the future of Unreal and how it will help us take our storytelling to the next level. That's why we're proud to announce that our next #tombraider game is being built on Unreal Engine 5!"
Epic Games' Unreal Engine
Epic Games held a live broadcast event called the State of Unreal as they launched their creative tool software, Unreal Engine 5, according to Windows Central.
Epic Games announced that Unreal Engine 5 is now available to all developers, rather than just a select group of partners who were previously granted early access. Epic Games concluded the State of Unreal stream by inviting Crystal Dynamics, the video game company behind the Tomb Raider, to make a special announcement.
Tomb Raider has had a massive following since its first launch. The original video game first appeared on PlayStation in 1996, and it has since been followed by a slew of sequels, a reboot, and three films.
The three "Tomb Raider" films have also reached success during their time of release.
As reported by The Verge, the company announced that both Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light and Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris would be making their console debuts on the Nintendo Switch sometime later this year to mark the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Tomb Raider.
Crystal Dynamics is not the only gaming studio that will start using Unreal Engine 5. It is also reported that the game developers from Gears of War maker The Coalition and The Witcher studio CD Projekt Red have been using Unreal Engine for quite some time now.
