Twitter is now implementing a new feature dubbed Twitter "Unmention." The social media company shared this information in addition to its recent announcement of testing the Twitter edit button.
The Twitter edit button is currently still in testing, and its difference from the Unmention feature is that the latter is now available for use.
Just this week, the social network began rolling out the new feature which allows users to remove themselves from a conversation that was previously a part of a user's feed.
Twitter Unmention Prioritizes Inner Peace
Twitter Unmention, as announced by the company's safety account confirms that the feature is available for select users on Twitter's web platform and describes it as "a way to help you protect your peace and remove yourself from conversations."
According to CNET, the new feature removes a user's handle from any tweets and prevents it from being tagged in any replies as a result of using it. In addition, it lets the users stop certain people from talking about them without having to block their accounts.
Twitter stated that for the time being, the experimental service is only available on the web. However, users can avoid receiving constant notifications for a tweet a user does not want to participate in by selecting "leave this conversation" from the tweet's options.
Origin of Twitter's Unmention Feature
The feature was first teased by Twitter privacy designer Dominic Camozzi in June 2021 as a "concept" that would allow users to untag their usernames throughout a thread, preventing them from being mentioned again in that conversation, and preventing them from receiving any further notifications.
The design was tweaked and the button name was changed in August after users complained that the term "Unmention" was confusing. This means that the button users will see will be "Leave this conversation" instead.
Twitter's Other New Features
Twitter's new features have been rolling out extensively this year. It looks like the company is shifting towards serving and developing more products in favor of their user base.
As reported by Engadget, Twitter first implemented the anti-abuse feature called "safety mode." The Twitter feature includes a tool that automatically blocks accounts for seven days if they post comments that contain offensive language. It was developed last year in 2021 and was released in the first quarter of this year.
After that, Twitter announced that they have been working on an edit button on the first day of April. Twitter even jokingly announced the news as an April Fools' joke. However, Twitter began to renounce it a few days after.
With the co-founder Jack Dorsey resigning as CEO, a new CEO taking over, and Elon Musk joining the board of Twitter. The company looks like it is going to roll out more changes.
