Apple Signs iOS 15.4 Again Following Studio Display Issues

Apple is re-signing a previous iOS firmware version due to issues with the company's Studio Display product.

A recent Macworld article mentioned that the Cupertino-based company is signing iOS 15.4 again following updating issues with its Studio Display monitor.

Apple has since fixed Studio Display's update issues, and all users can now update their displays to the latest possible firmware.

Apple Studio Display Issue Details

According to Macworld, Studio Display users began reporting their complaints on the Apple discussion forums about being unable to update their displays over the weekend.

Attempts of upgrading the display give them a notification that reads, "Apple Studio Display firmware update could not be completed. Try again in an hour. If the problem persists, contact an authorized Apple service provider."

Users also found that reconnecting the Studio Display to another Mac and/or restarting the display did not fix the issue, per MacRumors.

Macrumors also mentioned in its report that users in the Macrumors Forums are also talking about similar problems. Some users were even told by Apple to bring their displays in for repairs.

Apple's Possible Mistakes

Macworld and 9to5Mac presented two reasons why the Studio Display has problems with its update. According to 9to5Mac's article, the problem could be a server-side issue from Apple's side due to the company experiencing massive outages in March 2022, per The Guardian. This outage may have affected the update meant for Studio Displays.

However, the real reason the issue happened was due to Apple discontinuing iOS 15.4 after it released iOS 15.4.1 on March 30. MacRumors, in a separate article, did report that Apple stopped signing the firmware on April 1, adding that as iOS 15.4 is no longer being signed, it is not possible to downgrade to that version of iOS once iOS 15.4.1 is installed.

Macworld said that since Apple's Studio Display consists of parts that can be found in an iPhone 11, it couldn't properly install version 15.4, rendering iOS 15.4.1 unavailable for Studio Display.

Solutions to the Studio Display Update Problem

At least one Studio Display user reported that the failed update prevented their Mac from updating to macOS 12.3.1 until he disconnected the display. This user found a workaround by shutting down the Mac Studio, unplugging the Studio Display, plugging in an LG Monitor to the Mac Studio and rebooting it, and finally doing a macOS software update.

However, other users won't have to use such a workaround due to Apple re-signing iOS 15.4 again. According to Mr. Macintosh's tweet, Apple signed iOS 15.4 again on April 11, allowing Studio Displays to update to the latest firmware.

It is unclear how long iOS 15.4 will remain available for users to download, but hopefully, Apple won't remove the firmware again anytime soon.

iOS 15.4 included support for Boot Camp on Intel Macs and minor stability improvements. However, the recently added firmware did not include image quality adjustments to the display's 12MP Center Stage camera. Although iOS 15.4.1 does not appear to have the fix for the camera, Apple stated it would issue an update that would fix the camera's issue.
