Google will be holding a press event on July 24 hosted by Android boss Sundar Pichai. The company is expected to officially announce Android 4.3, the new Nexus 7, and more.
There have been recent rumors that Google was planning to schedule an event in July where it would announce its next-generation Nexus 7 tablet. It looks like the rumors were true, as the company has invited the press to an event in San Francisco that will be hosted by Android and Chrome boss Sundar Pichai. The company does not specify what's on tap from the invite, but it's very likely Google will use the event to announce its next major version of Android and an upgraded Nexus 7.
Android 4.3 will be the company's latest update to its mobile operating system. Google was widely expected to announce Android 4.3 at Google I/O in May, but for whatever reason there was no announcement. There have been recent leaks of the OS running on the Nexus 4 and Nexus 7, and Samsung is rumored to be skipping Android 4.2.2 on the Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 in favor of Android 4.3.
Android 4.3 is not expected to bring a major change to the UI, but rather some minor tweaks and a few new features. Leaked images have shown that the camera application will see an update that will make it more intuitive to use. In the current version of Android it can be a little difficult to operate because your finger almost always covers all of the various options in its UI. The Notification System will also be updated to allow applications to access notifications with the ability to read, dismiss, and activate buttons on them. Google will probably have a few more surprises in store beyond those two features.
An updated Nexus 7 is also expected to be announced at the event. We reported back in June that Google was rumored to be scheduling an event in July to unveil its next-generation Nexus 7. The company released the original Nexus 7 last July, so a refresh is due, and recent leaks have shown an updated model is on the way.
We'll have to wait until July 24 to see what Google officially has planned, but Android 4.3 and the Nexus 7 are the frontrunners.
