The Ford Mustang Mach-E GT police car is joining the fleet of the New York Police Department (NYPD), which already includes hybrids from 2020 and a Tesla Model 3 sedan since last year.
The NYPD will soon be riding their new electric vehicles to catch criminals on the busy streets of New York, making crime-busting greener than ever.
Ford Mustang Mach-E GT Police Car
As per a report by Motor Authority, The Mustang Mach-E is already a familiar sighting to New Yorkers. It has filled the streets of the Big Apple after some taxi firms in the state have opted to purchase the electric SUV.
But this time around, the all-electric SUV of the American automaker, the Ford Mustang Mach-E GT, is now an NYPD cop car.
The move of the New York police to turn Ford's electric SUVs into patrol vehicles is part of its project to go greener, which began two years ago already.
The New York City Department of Citywide Administrative Services or DCAS announced last Dec. 30, 2021, that the city plans to purchase around 184 Mustang Mach-E.
The deputy commissioner of DCAS, Keith Kerman, stated that the Mach-E purchase should enable "law enforcement agencies to put electric models to the full test and work out maintenance, lights, and sirens, charging, and other operational issues."
The statement added that the new electric SUV police cars should see the light of day in the second quarter of 2022.
NYPD's Mustang Mach-ET GT
A few months after the announcement of the Mach-E police car purchase, the NYPD showcased its all-new electric police car during the New York Auto Show, according to a recent report by Hot Cars.
Unlike the conventional NYPD cars that we have seen in the past, the new cop car no longer drives with a massive V8 engine.
To be more precise, NYPD's Mustang Mach-E GT sports twin permanent magnet synchronous motors.
It adequately replaces the gas-guzzling V8 engine of previous NYPD patrol cars as it provides 480 horsepower along with 634-pound feet of torque.
On top of that, the electric patrol car is rated to drive for about 270 miles or 435 kilometers on a single battery charge.
However, considering the Mustang Mach-E GT, which has been turned into a crime-busting car, is likely to get a shorter battery range.
It comes as it rocks typical cop vehicle stuff, such as its bright flashing LED lights, and loud sirens, not to mention its bulletproof windows and doors.
On top of that, the NYPD is still adding 99 more Mustang Mach-E GT to fill up its 100 EV fleet, which should start hitting the New York roads in summer.
