If you're one of the people who are early waiting for a sequel to Gearbox's Tales from the Borderlands, now is the time to celebrate.

The game developer recently announced at the Penny Arcade Expo (PAX) that it is currently developing a new entry (a sequel!) in its Tales from the Borderlands series, per Kotaku.

Gearbox mentioned that the game would be out later in 2022, Gearbox said. However, the game developer didn't specify a release date.

'Tales from the Borderlands' Details

Although Gearbox's announcement isn't that laden with details, the company's CEO, Randy Pitchford, detailed how different it would be compared to the previous game.

According to Pitchford, the game will be done in the interactive fiction style with "all-new characters and all-new stories in from the Borderlands." He also mentioned during the event that Gearbox itself would be developing the game.

"Because of the succes and our love for Tales [from the Borderlands], and because of our interest in developing the Borderlands world in many new ways, we thought it would be fun and exciting to dive into the format of interactive fiction once again," Pitchford said during PAX, per Twitter user @JayShockblast's tweet.

The previous game was originally developed by Telltale Games, which famously developed Telltale's The Walking Dead series and The Wolf Among Us. The company originally went defunct in 2018 due to a lack of funding but was revived in 2019 thanks to LCG Entertainment's purchase of the company, per IGN. However, it has since taken a back seat in game development and is instead working as a publisher, according to Game Informer.

It will also be published by 2K Games, the same publisher behind the main Borderlands franchise.

Although Gearbox and Pitchford didn't specify a release date for the game, they did mention that the game's full announcement will come this summer and that the game would be released later this year, per Gearbox's official Twitter account. If the schedule holds as planned, then Gearbox was already developing the game long before 2022 came around.

The People's Reaction

PAX attendees were positively shocked and excited when Pitchford made his announcement. However, Gearbox's tweet regarding the upcoming game has garnered mixed reactions from its fans.

Many felt uninterested about the game when they learned that Telltale wouldn't be involved in the game's development, citing Gearbox's "inexperience" with dialogue-heavy games or that it would feature new characters instead of the ones from the previous game, per Twitter users @PSOCecil and @PereiraDwayne's tweets.

Others are skeptical about Gearbox's decision to develop the game on its own, such as Twitter users @anilatartn and @SAMURAiOS.

Despite the criticisms and skepticism, there are also people who are excited and can't wait to play the game. Whether the game will cater to everyone's expectations in some way remains to be seen until the game is finally released.
