Gamers in the early 2000s may probably remember Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory and the good times they had playing the game. It received such high praise from both critics and gamers that it was dubbed one of the greatest multiplayer shooters ever to appear on the PC.
However, a game as old as Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory would be difficult to find until recently.
If you haven't played the game yourself, now is the time.
A recent report from Kotaku mentioned that Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory is now available on Steam for the first time since its release 19 years ago.
The best part? The game is free-to-play and only takes a gigabyte of storage.
Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory Steam Inclusion Details
According to Kotaku's report, Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory is one of the games Bethesda is transferring to Steam after the company decided to let go of its game launcher favoring the Valve gaming distribution service.
Bethesda's game launcher was mostly criticized for it being a functional but bare-bones offering of a game launcher instead of a proper one, with PC Gamer saying in 2018 that it was designed "more as a pretty interface" to purchase the company's games than a way of managing them.
Additionally, gamers using Bethesda's game launcher can start migrating their games, save files, and purchases can be carried over to their Steam account starting April 27 until May 11, per Bethesda's announcement. Although some Bethesda games can have their saved files automatically transferred to Steam, some may require manual copying to be transferred from Bethesda to Steam.
Players who have not transferred their games, save data, DLC, and add-ons may transfer them even after the May 11 deadline.
Aside from Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, other classic Bethesda games, such as the first two Elder Scrolls games, Arena and Daggerfall, will also come to Steam for free, according to Gaming Bible. Bethesda's creator tools for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Fallout 4 will also be available on Steam for free.
Is Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory Worth Playing?
Kotaku mentioned in its article that Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory is a multiplayer game set in World War Two, pitting the Americans against the Germans on a 16v16 map where players can form smaller squads of four to defeat the opposing team.
What made the game so memorable and iconic during its time is its maps and the flow it creates as well as the classes players can choose, per the Wolfenstein Fandom page.
Each class gives players specific roles to play in a squad or in the team as a whole.
Soldiers can use heavy weapons that can deal large amounts of damage while medics can heal other players and get up close to enemies for close-quarters combat. Engineers can repair vehicles, construct fortifications, and defuse explosives, while Field ops can drop ammo packs for other players to replenish their ammunition and call in artillery or airstrikes on parts of the map.
Speaking of the game's maps, Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory gives them a "wonderful flow," with players needing to achieve one objective before moving on to a new set of things to attack or defend.
Maffelu wrote in his IMDB review of the game that the only problem the game has is that it's too addictive.
All the different moments make the game very hard to get tired of," he added. "The only problem as I see it is that once you sit down to play, you sit there for always more than you should as every map has at least 25 minutes designated to it."
Although the game has been available on Splash Damage's website, having it released on Steam makes connecting and playing with friends more convenient, which makes the release a bit more exciting.
