AT&T began selling the S4 Active last month for $199.99 but the handset is now available from Amazon for $149.99.
After seeing the success Sony had with its water-resistant Xperia Z, Samsung decided to bring a water and dust-resistant version of its flagship Galaxy S4 to the smartphone market. The Galaxy S4 Active retains virtually similar specs to the Galaxy S4, but is IP67=certified, meaning that it's water and dust-resistant.
The company gave AT&T the exclusive on the handset and the carrier currently charges $199.99 with a new 2-year contract online and in its retail stores. There has been no information released on whether other carriers will offer the smartphone in the future, so if you want a water-resistant Galaxy S4 you're going to have to stick with AT&T.
A new deal from Amazon, however, allows for considerable savings over what AT&T charges for the Galaxy S4 Active. Amazon is offering the smartphone for $149.99 with a new 2-year contract. In addition to being IP67-certified water- and dust-resistant, the Samsung Galaxy S4 Active features a scratch-resistant 5-inch 1920 x 1080 TFT display, runs Android 4.2.2, is powered by a 1.9GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor, includes 16GB of internal storage, 2GB of RAM, an 8-megapixel rear camera with autofocus and LED flash, a 2-megapixel front facing camera, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS, 4G LTE radio, microSD expansion slot with support for up to 64GB microSD cards, and includes a 2,600 mAh battery.
The Galaxy S4 Active also comes with all of the features that made the Galaxy S4 a hit with consumers. Air View allows users to hover their finger over pictures, files, links and text to get an instant preview without even touching the screen. The Air Gesture feature allows a user to make the smartphone perform different actions by waving (or gesturing) his hand over the display; it can be used to skip songs in the Music app, check for notifications, or automatically answer a call on speakerphone while the user is driving. Eraser Shot will allow removal of any unwanted background distractions from photos and videos. The Samsung Smart Pause feature will pause a video if you look away from the screen of the smartphone. There's also an integrated IR controller that will turn the device into a universal remote control and program guide.
You can order the AT&T Galaxy S4 Active in Dive Blue through Amazon for $149.99 when signing a new 2-year contract. The retailer is also offering free two-day shipping with orders.
