Giving Alexa a factory reset isn't something you should do very often, but if the smart assistant gets itself into a bind, knowing how to do so is helpful.
Fortunately, The Ambient listed "how-tos" about resetting various models of Amazon Echo, which we have complied below.
Do This First When Your Device Is Unresponsive
If it only looks to be unresponsive, the first thing you should do is switch off the power. Simply remove the power adapter from the back, wait a few seconds, and then reconnect it.
You'll need to do a factory reset if your Alexa speaker is still not working after this step.
Using Factory Reset Buttons
Amazon Echo (1st-gen, 2nd-gen, 3rd-gen, 4th-gen)
- Press and hold the Reset button on your first-generation Echo device to reset it. Wait for the light ring to blink off and on.
- Press and hold the Microphone Off and Volume Down keys at the same time to reset your second-generation device. Wait around 20 seconds for the light ring to turn orange.
- Hold down the action button for 25 seconds to reset a 4th or 3rd generation Echo. The orange light ring will pulsate before turning off. It will then turn back on, turn blue, and then turn orange once more.
Amazon Echo Dot (2nd-gen, 3rd-gen, 4th-gen)
- Press and hold the Microphone Off and Volume Down keys at the same time to reset the Amazon Echo Dot second generation. It should take about 20 seconds for the light ring to turn orange.
- Press and hold the Action button on the right of the top panel for 25 seconds to reset the Amazon Echo Dot third generation, fourth generation, or Echo Dot with Clock.
Amazon Echo Plus (1st-gen, 2nd-gen)
- To reset your first-generation Echo Plus, press and release the Reset button once. Wait for the light ring to blink off and on.
- Press and hold the Action button for 20 seconds to reset your second-generation Echo Plus. Wait for the light ring to blink off and on.

Reset Amazon Echo Sub
- Press and hold the Action button located directly above the power cord for 25 seconds to reset the Echo Sub.
Reset All Generations of Amazon Echo Spot and Echo Show, 5, 8, 10, 15
- Say, "Alexa, go to settings," or swipe down from the top of the screen and select Settings to reset your second-generation Echo Show without losing your smart home device connections. Select Device Options, then Reset to Factory Defaults (while keeping Smart Home Device Connections). For the Echo Show 5, Show 8, or Show 10, follow the same instructions.
- Say, "Alexa, go to settings," or swipe down from the top of the screen and select Settings to reset your first-generation Echo Show or Echo Spot. After that, go to Device Options and Reset to Factory Defaults.
- You may also reset your Echo Show by pressing and holding the mute and volume down keys for 15 seconds until the Amazon logo appears on the screen.
Using the Alexa App To Factory Reset
1) Go to the Devices section.
2) At the top, tap the Echo & Alexa icon.
3) Select the speaker that needs to be factory reset.
4) Scroll down and tap Factory Reset.
5) Verify that you want to reset.
