You'll no longer have to worry that your text message might be sent to the wrong text channel on your Discord server while on a voice call.
Discord has announced that it is finally bringing text chat to voice channels.
What's New with Text Chat in Voice Channel
The new feature of Discord is similar to text chats available on video communication services, such as Google Meet or Zoom, according to IGN Southeast Asia.
Previously, if you were on a Discord voice chat, you had to create an entirely new text channel wanted if you wanted to send a message.
There would be also cases when your had to use an entirely different messaging app like Twitter or WhatsApp to send the message.
But now, with the inclusion of text chat in the voice channel, this is not necessary anymore.
There is a dedicated section for each channel where you can type your message. You don't have to join the call to participate, either, so you can pop in to offer help without too much disruption, according to Engadget.
Moreover, as Engadget pointed out, voice channels now have the same permissions as regular text chats, so moderators can limit the ability to send messages, stickers and other content. It also enable users upload larger file.
As a new category in the voice Chat permissions will also be introduced, you will be able to moderate what users can do in the voice channel chat.
You may enable permissions to attach files, embed links, and add reactions, according to IGN Southeast Asia.
The feature is free for all servers. Presently, it is available for servers that haven't been set to "Community" status or only private-use servers.
All servers will have text enabled by June 29, said Engadget.
Discord's Move Help Reduce Confusion
In a press release, Discord noted that the voice channel will have its own text chat, meaning those in that specific voice channel will have the option to send text messages.
Discord's move could help reduce confusion, not to mention the proliferation of channels created solely to handle text chat for voice users, according to Engadget.
Discord was accused by critics of focusing too much on Clubhouse-like broadcasts, Premium channel memberships and other features that go beyond the company's original gaming focus.
Discord is going back to basics with its move to add text chat in voice channels. This is a feature users have wanted for a long time.
Discord is a popular group-chatting app. It was originally made to give gamers a place to build communities and talk, according to Business Insider.
However, since its launch in 2015, the app has branched out to include communities from all over the internet, including writers, artists and even K-Pop stans.
During the pandemic, it has boomed in popularity since more people have worked, played games, and socialized online.
The platform says it now has more than 140 million active monthly users.
