TikTok Rolls Out Screen Time Controls to Monitor App Usage

Designed to help users manage their TikTok usage, the video hosting service has rolled out more screen time controls. A new in-app dashboard was added, which will monitor how long people are spending on TikTok.

The new features include two new controls for monitoring and managing screen time usage. There is also a new digital well-being guide added to TikTok app's Safety Center.

TikTok said that the guide titled "How can I reflect on my digital well-being with my family and friends?," is intended to help users "reflect more holistically" about how they spend time online, according to TechCrunch.

TikTok Dashboard Will Show the Time You Spend on the App

The time you spend in TikTok, the time when you use it the most and how often the app is opened will be shown in the dashboard. In addition with the new features, screen time limits for how long TikTok users can use the app in a single sitting can be set.

TikTok has previously offered screen time controls. With the previous feature, after a designated daily limit, the screen time out. However, the new app setting will have TikTok remind users to "take a break" if they are using it for an extended period of time.

The changes in the screen time controls of TikTok are introduced as the app was bombarded by questions about its impact on teens.

As a matter of fact, a bill that would increase the study of social media addiction was introduced by lawmakers in the Senate. This is part of the effort to protect younger users of the app.

TikTok now says it's introducing "additional screen time restrictions for teens between the ages of 13 and 17," according to Engadget.

The weekly "digital well-being prompts" will be seen by teens. If they have spent more than 100 minutes in TikTok on a single day, they will get an additional screen time reminders.

Parents Will be Able to Set Screen Time Limits for Children

TikTok's new screen features are addition to the screen time control for families. For over two years, this have been available globally. This also includes a means for parents to set screen time limits for children.

According to TechCrunch, "the features are also supplemental to the daily screen time limits tool TikTok added in February 2020, which is available to all users from the app's existing Digital Wellbeing section."

With the newly launched in-app tool, users can schedule regular screen time breaks. This will help users monitor how much time they spend on TikTok.

App addiction which are not related to total consumption will be address by the new features of the app. It will, however, address losing track of how much time you're spending on TikTok every time you open the app.

The new features are in fact a "tool for managing screen time on a per-session basis," according to TechCrunch.

TechCrunch cited that according to Wall Street Journal, TikTok have an impact on children's brain. The study, which is focused on college students and young adults, found out that about 5.9% of TikTok users may have "significant problematic use."
